Challenge

To select a brick that contrasted with the carefully articulated palette of coloured renders and timber panelling, in order to lock this new two storey Health Centre sympathetically within its context whilst providing a modern definition for the building.

Solution

Whilst Cranleigh is typically associated with ‘reddish brown’ brickwork, a detailed review of local buildings highlighted a predominance of blue and purple tones within the brickwork, which the architects felt would better compliment the mid-brown timber panelling. With the agreement of the local Planning Design Committee, Ibstock Brick’s Staffordshire Blue Brindle Smooth bricks were used to create the curved brick façade and imposing three-storey services block and large projecting panels to the rear and side elevations. Pallets of the chosen brick, hand selected by Ibstock Brick to offer the darker purple and blue hues required, were coupled with buff coloured mortar to enhance the reds and browns within the colour variation, and sit the modern, distinctive exterior sympathetically within its traditional village surroundings.
